2020.10.12 23:24 RandomJPG6 Building a rig for Virtual Production/Real-Time Filmmaking/Gaming rig. Should I go with Zen3 or a discounted i9 10000 series CPU?

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
I’m looking to build a new PC primarily for game development with a secondary use as my primary gaming machine. I want get into virtual production so I will primarily be working in the Unreal Engine for cinematics, blueprint creation, VFX, and level design. I also want to get into VR for both game development and arch viz work.
My main programs will be Unreal Engine 4 for development/creating cinematics, Maya for animation and modeling, and the Adobe Suite for editing/content creation. I am not veresed in Houdini but it would be nice to have that option as well, but I primarily want to keep most of my work in Unreal.
I was originally planning on going for a 5900x/3080 build. However, my friend works at Intel and can get me a steep discount on a CPU. I was leaning towards a i9 10000 series CPU. He said the 10980XE is about $500 with his discount, which I am more than willing to buy but I don't know if that would mean I need a more expensive motherboard and thus it would go out of my budget. Not sure if the cost/performance would be worth it even with his discount. I also have concerns with stock for the 5900x.
For games I would like 4k 60FPS but my primary concern is using this as a production rig.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
I'm looking to spend ~$2000 but would be wiling to go to ~$2500. $3000 is my absolute limit.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
ASAP.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
CPU, motherboard, and video card, RAM, an NVME card for games, power supply, and CPU cooler.
Depending on my parts I would be willing to spend extra on a new case or case fans. I already have a CM Storm Scout 2 Advanced that I love, so I would like to keep it. If I need a replacement I would ideally like to have the same amount of HDD bays. A carrying handle would be nice as well, but not required. I'll probably just reuse my current case as I've had no issues with it.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
United States, no Microcenter near me
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Below is my current PC. I intend to reuse the case if I can, my two SSDs are my drive for OS/programs, blu-ray drive, and my two HDDs for storage.

Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Down the line I would like to be able to overclock, but it’s not my primary concern at the moment. I want to get a CPU cooler, but I'm undecided on liquid cooling.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
I already have two 250GB SSDs for RAID0 from my previous build but would like a NVME card for loading games on. Ray tracing would be a nice feature to have as well.
What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
Wired, Wi-fi not needed.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
If I need to purchase a new case I would like it to have a handle for carrying to game jams. I prefer black or black/red. Looking for mid-twoer, window, and at least the same amount of HDD bays. I'd prefer to just reuse my old case though.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Yes, pro
Extra info or particulars:
I would like to future proof my build so I can get 128GB ram down the line. I own two 1080P monitors but plan on updating them to 2K monitors and getting a 4K TV to play games on. I would also like the ability to play any game at console like settings until the next console cycle.
I'm pretty set on a 3080 XC3 already.

2020.09.27 01:46 dsc211 Advice on a build

Hi,
So I have a build i'm trying to do somewhat soon using some older parts I salvaged from an old pre-built I got back in 2015 (which is why the processor, mobo and video card are kinda out of date). I already have a Ryzen build I did earlier in the year for more graphically intense gaming and i'm considering getting a better video card and using the 5700XT I have in there for this build sometime in the future if it'll fit, but for now I just need some advice getting this build off the ground. The motherboard, cpu, video card and RAM are all stuff I already have, and the case is something i'm really fixated on, I just need advice on if the cooler I have picked out would be sufficient, if this SFX power supply would work out and if anyone thinks i'd need more fans aside from the cooler because I know the SG13 runs hot and is a little cluttered.
Here's the list:

Provide any additional details you wish below.
I have a very specific question about this build.
Every part aside from the RTX3080 is my current setup (please ignore the peripherals, I haven't updated those - all the internal components are up to date), I just want to upgrade the GPU, but I'm running into compatibility issue with PSU - power range should be okay, I'm estimated at 550W with 650W PSU, so I should be in the clear, at least for now, but I don't have the 3 PCIE 8pin connectors RTX3080 uses. I have a 6+2, a 6, and some spare Molex connectors. I'm considering using a PCIE 6pin to PCIE 8pin adapter, and a 2 Molex to PCIE 8pin adapter to make the ends meet, so to speak.
My questions are: will this blow up, will this work, and what are the risks I should be aware of? Worst case scenario I probably can splurge for a new PSU, but honestly - I'd rather not if I can avoid it.
Thanks in advance.

2020.09.14 01:51 SanSanSanSan8 Ready To Build. I Just Want Some Last Minute Opinions

1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games (ex: resolution, FPS, settings) or programs you will be using.
Gaming, lots of word processing, watching movies, maybe some music editing down the line. I play mostly strategy and rpg games, at 1440p and I have a 165hz monitor.
2. What is your maximum PRE-TAX budget before rebates and shipping?
I already bought most of the parts, so I'm not hoping to spend more than $1200 on the rest of the build.
3. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Within the week.
4. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ex: toweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
CPU, CPU Cooler, Motherboard, and PSU
5. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? How old are they? Brands and models are appreciated.
I'll be reusing my storage, memory and I already bought the GPU and Case.
6. Will you be overclocking (ex: CPU/GPU/RAM)? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line?
Honestly I could do without overclocking, but I want longevity on my build so I'm still open to it.
7. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, Wi-Fi, VR, VirtualLink, tensor cores, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
It needs to be mini itx, it needs to be wifi capable. I think that's it.
8. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-towefull-tower sizes, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc.), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Mini ITX. I also love RGB, but I don't absolutely need it.
9. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? Note: some post-secondary students can get Windows 10 for free.
I will be using my current installation of windows.
10. Will you be upgrading this PC in the future (ie: will you swap out better parts later on or will you build an entirely new tower later)? If so, when?
IF and only IF the new 3000 cards appeal to me I might upgrade, but I'm not planning to right now. I hear that the current intel motherboards are compatible with future intel CPUs, and I might be interested in that.
11. Do you have a brand preference? (ex: AMD/Intel for CPUs, AMD/NVIDIA for video cards, etc)
Intel for CPUs because of a compatibility issue (I don't want to have to reinstall windows, I want to use the windows already installed on my SSD)
12. What are the specs of your old PC / laptop? Do you want to see if it can be upgraded instead? If so, paste its build from PCPartPicker here.

Namely, I'm wondering if the CPU Cooler will be good enough/quiet enough, and if I should go for a different motherboard and/or PSU (although it seems that most of the SFX PSUs are out of stock or waaay too expensive right now)
Thanks in advance!

2020.09.08 08:43 eriochan Looking to upgrade from i7-4790K to Ryzen 5 3600, a bit confused on converting

Hey everyone,
With the 3000 RTX cards coming out in just a week, I'm looking to finally update my PC that has served me so so well over the past 6 years. I'm of course looking to do a CPU+Mobo+Ram upgrade as my current CPU is an Intel i7-4790K and motherboard only supports DDR3 memory.
I've really only used Intel my entire PC building life, so I feel I don't have the instinctual knowledge to determine with confidence if jumping to a Ryzen 5 3600 will be an upgrade because of the progress AMD has made over the years as well as the sheer age of some of my components.
Current priorities are retaining current processing power at minimum, and not bottlenecking my gaming :).
My current build:
Type Item
CPU Intel Core i7-4790K 4 GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler Corsair H100i 77 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard ASRock Z87 Extreme4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR3-1600 CL9 Memory
Memory Corsair Dominator Platinum 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR3-1600 CL9 Memory
Storage Seagate Barracuda 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB Founders Edition Video Card
Case Corsair Air 540 ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply Corsair RM 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply
Monitor Alienware AW3420DW 34.1" 3440x1440 120 Hz Monitor
So a couple questions I have are:
  1. Will I see at least parallel performance with my dated i7 from a Ryzen 5 3600? If not, what do i need at a minimum to maintain my current processing power. I realize that might sound silly.
  2. What pieces would you personally upgrade, or perhaps what order if doing it over time?
Thanks for any thoughts!

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
80% production, 20% gaming
GPU will be kept until new ones arrive, maybe I'll get lucky with used mid-tier ones. See the current build below

2020.08.04 03:15 sam-leeroy-jackson Which is better for a Ryzen 9 budget build around $800? I am upgrading

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
I will be doing video editing, stream gaming, processing heavy productivity workstation. 25% gaming, 75% production
I am having issue finding a good motherboard, see below for my build versions, which one should I get? I wish to have enough USB slots too for max productivity
I am also looking for better ram, I think a faster one will help me with big programs such as sony vegas, lightroom
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
$600-$800
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Anytime between now and black Friday
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Could replace the tower but I am content with the one I've had for many years. The 580 GPU will be upgraded along the line, for now, I think getting the most processing power I can be a good stepping stone
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
US
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Yes, see my build below
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
I don't think it necessary for R9 and I am not skill enough to do it
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Good for streaming for FB live, making videos, the production side
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
No. I am choosing between lian li atx or a be cool tower
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
No

2020.07.30 18:56 jonathank2 Advice on upgrading PC for Adobe (Premiere, AE, Illustrator)

Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)
I have read the sidebar and rules.
What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.
I recently started a small business, and my post processing needs have increased. The small business revolves around photography, videography, and local marketing. More specifically, I take video footage and apply a variety of post processing effects in Premiere to highlight aspects of the video. I've recently started working with the "Track Camera" function in After Effects, and done some logo work with Illustrator.
I custom built my computer with advice from this subreddit 5-6 years ago, and I've reached the point where my normal workflow is maxing out CPU usage. I'm looking to upgrade the most essential parts to boost performance while not completing a complete rebuild at this point.
If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)
I'm looking for Premiere/AE performance improvement without running into bottlenecks.
What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?
I'd like to keep the upgrades to less than $1,000 USD.
In what country are you purchasing your parts?
United States
Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).
I'm primarily interested in upgrading CPU, Motherboard, Memory, Storage, and Case at this point. I hope to maintain my CPU cooler, GPU, and PSU for this build and upgrade them at a later date.

It has been a while since I last built a PC by myself, so I am not super up to date. General questions I like to have answers to: - Will this setup work? - Is 32GB enough RAM for what I have planned? - Did I have missed anything?
NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

2020.07.28 03:21 Orerado ($500) Is an Upgrade Worth it or is Starting Over Best?

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
I would like to see if I can get another year or two out of my current build (with some upgrades), but it's starting to show it's age.
Gaming - AAA titles at reasonable settings, but ultra is not needed. I also play non-AAA games like Rimworld and Path of Exile (really chugging right now).
Work - Remote desktop access, and general processing.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
$500ish for upgrading the desktop.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Soon, but doesn't necessarily need to be ASAP.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
No peripherals needed. Parts original to my build (4 years or so ago) - CPU, Memory, and Motherboard. Also open to suggestions.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
Southern California, but would rather shipped options.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Will be reusing storage, monitors, keyboard, mouse, and relatively new graphics card (see pcpartpicker).
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Would rather not, but can if needed.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
No
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Setup is currently black and white, but I'm open.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
No
Extra info or particulars I know a little bit about building the computer and parts, but I'm a bit lost on my best bang for my buck here. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Provide any additional details you wish below.
A few years back I had a i7-4790k and 1080ti build and it was awesome. Ran it on a PG279Q and was able to get high frames and do max settings on some games. But I no longer have that computer and wish to build another one.
I haven't been up to date on PC hardware in almost 2 years so I don't know much but I would like to know if this pc build can handle these games on 1440p/144hz on max or high settings: BF4, BF1, Halo MCC, KF2, DMC 5, Resident Evil 2 HD, Metro Exodus and probably a few others.
Also another question. Is the 2080ti worth it for these games? I could afford it but if the difference is a few frames then I rather not.
Also is this CPU overkill for these games or no?

2020.07.09 11:09 GrimReaper711 PC rebooting under load - Motherboard issue?

Bit of an annoying issue, I've found since I built this PC that it would reboot or BSOD occasionally. I decided to try and get to the bottom of it this week and installed "OCCT" and gave it a spin.
I ran 3 types of tests: CPU stress test for 2 minutes, GPU for 2 minutes then the power test (which I understand does both tests at the same time).
When I did this, I found that the power test would cause a reboot every single time in less than 1 minute of running. I looked at when I got the PSU -> an Antec TPQ-850 that I bought back in 2008. OK, the PSU is ancient and probably well and truly beyond it's used by date. Today I went and bought a new PSU, the Corsair 750RMx mentioned in the part list below.
Frustratingly, I ran the tests again after installing it and am still running into restarts within 1 minute of running the power benchmark. I guess my issue might actually be with the Motherboard? Just wondering if there's anything else I could check before opening an RMA/support ticket with MSI? Temps do not look excessive on any part.

Background: This is what I am calling my "decade build". My intent is for it to last 10 years. That's why it has an x570 motherboard and a 1600AF. My plan is to add low cost upgrades over the next 10 years until it hit max and then retire it to a life of retro gaming. Of course by then Im hoping "retro gaming" includes PS4/PS5! (for context, this is replacing an i7 3770 with a RX 570 which just became the "guest" computer, pushing an i7 970/1050ti to the retro gaming system)
So a 1600AF for now, 3800/3900 when they become cheap, 4000 series after that and then what ever is the last AM4 processor gets dropped in. By starting with a 5700XT I figure I can go 4-5 years before putting in a new GPU. If Im lucky I can get a PCIe 4.0 card then.
Also, I intend to Hacintosh this system. I had made that decision before Apple announced the move to ARM and at first I was going to skip that but decided I would do it anyway, just for the challenge. So eventually the 480GB SSD will become my Mac boot drive.
Build: I'll start with some pictures of the case. The case was a gift from a friend who had two of these, new in box, just taking up space in a shed. Given its an 8 year old case, it was amazingly up to date. In fact it has some features that new cases don't like support for LOTS of drives and a side vent. The down side is no glass to see the sweet RGB. Wait, that's not a down side :) Anyway, Lian Li has been making great cases for a long time and this one is no exception - solid feel, nice features, lots of space. You can't see it but the USB port my thumb drive is plugged into is USB 3.0. Again, this is an 8 year old case!
I choose the 1600AF mostly because I found it on Amazon for $85. This was back in ancient times (March) before scalpers had bought them all up to resell on eBay. I just loved the idea of a processor that would have been $10,000 when the Lian Li case was made going for $85!
I went with the ASUS TUF Gaming x570 Plus because it hit the best price/performance for x570. Im not using the WiFi but I dont mind having it. Besides long term compatibility, I wanted an x570 for the extra PCIe lanes. Some day Im going to use both the NVMe slots and all of the PCIe slots and I want everything to work.
One thing I was very concerned about was using the 1600AF with the x570. It wasn't until after I had bought both that I checked if they were compatible and much to my horror ASUS said they were not. I crossed my fingers that the BIOS would see the 1600AF as a 2600 (supported) and I either got lucky or ASUS secretly supports 1xxx series Ryzen on x570 motherboards. I even (stupidly) updated the BIOS to v1407 but luckily it didnt break anything. Im holding off going to the new 2407 BIOS until I get a good grip on how to flash back to an older BIOS just in case.
Here are some interior shots. Note that these were at various points of cable management, dont shame me. Also, not listed on the build are the two spinning rust drives. 1x 10TB WD Blue and 1x 2TB WD Blue. The 10TB drive is NTSF and read only for the Macintosh. The 2TB is FAT32 and read/write for the Hacintosh. That lets me easily move files between the two systems.
Finally, after getting it all built I decided it was too loud. I had a complete post on that but the bottom line is I decided to replace the fans with Noctua ones. Now it is whisper quiet!
Benchmarks: Im VERY happy with the performance. I used Ryzen Master to apply a slight overclock to 3.6GHz. I know it can be pushed more (GN got it to 4.2GHz) but overclocking is not really my deal. Still, a Time Spy score in the top 25% and a 2700 on Cinabench is great (no idea why the Cinabench run doesn't reflect the overclock). I tossed in the UserBenchmarks score. yes, I know they are jerks but some of their benchmarks are not.
Notes:
So there it is. Im happy.

Monitor, keyboard, mouse, data hdd.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
No overclocking.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
No specific features
What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
Definitely wired.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Prefer smaller cases that's quiet. Definitely no full towers.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
I have a windows 10 home atm. If I get a refurb Dell optiplex, that should come with its own Win10Pro.
Extra info or particulars:
Would a Dell Optiplex work as an upgrade? I can attach my data hdd, an optiplex 990 MT would hold my RX 470.
Thanks for any suggestions!

2020.06.20 00:21 ExcitedTurtle123 Bringing a 2014 PC to 2020

Hey everyone! I built my PC back in 2014 and at the time it was relatively future-proof, but now it's time to give it a major upgrade!

1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games (ex: resolution, FPS, settings) or programs you will be using.

2. What is your maximum PRE-TAX budget before rebates and shipping?
$1000 max, but preferably closer to $600.

3. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Within the next 3 weeks.

4. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ex: toweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
RAM, Motherboard, CPU, and any other parts that you think need an upgrade!

5. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? How old are they? Brands and models are appreciated.
Reusing most parts from my current build! Parts were bought in early 2014 and Question 12 has the full list.

6. Will you be overclocking (ex: CPU/GPU/RAM)? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line?
Not likely.

7. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, Wi-Fi, VR, VirtualLink, tensor cores, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
None!

8. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-towefull-tower sizes, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular colour theme preference for the components?
N/A, my current case is a full tower.

9. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? Note: some post-secondary students can get Windows 10 for free.
Nope!

10. Will you be upgrading this PC in the future (ie: will you swap out better parts later on or will you build an entirely new tower later)? If so, when?
Yes! I plan to upgrade it again in roughly 3-5 years.

11. Do you have a brand preference? (ex: AMD/Intel for CPUs, AMD/NVIDIA for video cards, etc)
Slight preference for Intel, but performance and price are more important.

12. Do you already have an old PC that you're thinking of upgrading? If so, paste its build here.

2020.05.28 20:59 UberDeathTurtle Motherboard is dead, is this a good upgrade?

So my motherboard seems to be done for, and as it is no longer manufactured, and along with my i7-4790k they are starting to become a little dated anyway, I figure I might just upgrade. I mainly use it for gaming/streaming on twitch/recording gaming stuff for YouTube, along with making music in Ableton.
So I threw this together, everything on this list I already own except for the CPU, Mobo and RAM (my current ram is not compatible). Now I know it seems silly to get all this and keep my gtx 970, but a new GPU isn't currently in the budget, but will be upgraded In the next 6 months, by the time cyberpunk comes out.
I'm mainly wondering if this is a good upgrade for what I want to do, and if everything should work accordingly, and if not; any tips?
Thanks in advance!
